Types of Wine: Apple Wine

Apple wine is a specific wine made from skins, seeds, stems and fruit liquor from apples. Blended with many other kinds of wine grape distillations, Apple wines can make excellent aperitifs and desserts wines for those who wish to drink their dessert. Apple wine comes from both old World and New World sources. France, Switzerland and Britain produce various types and tastes of apple wine/cider.

Home drinkers of apple wine are compelled to make their own wine, or taste the best of the German apfelwein as their budget allows. Fermented apple cider is the homegrown brew, but international wine standards require processes heightening both flavor and color as well as alcohol content. Apfelwein brings more dryness than is customary from traditional ciders.

Apple wine is an extension of the apple nuances felt in white and tropical fruit wine noses throughout the old and new worlds. Residual sugar and regional apple differences present enjoyable variation in apple wine composition and effect. Germany even has cider “trails” tracking the wine making for apples through the country. Diversity and personal signature in an apple wine has caused wine fairs to start up and even Spanish “Sidrerias” to exist.

Apple wine is a traditional German and Luxembourg alehouse preference, suited for imbibing after a long day tilling fields or keyboards. But even Japan and Mexico have their own apple wine blends! The alcohol content is about half a normal wine, from 5 to 8 per cent total concentration. Germans even drink apple wine with cola mixed in! Cultivated apple wine drinkers never drink from the decanter and retire the last drops on the floor.
