Types of Wine: Montepulciano d'Abruzzo & Montepulciano Vino Nobile

Montepulciano d'Abruzzo and Montepulciano Vino Nobile are both red wines but they should not be confused. As the appellation shows, the Italian Montepulciano wine made from the Abruzzo grape is a different wine type and separate tier wine derivative product. The price and availability of these two will be markedly at variance. Montepulciano d'Abruzzo will be a young wine, possibly drunk before its reserve quality standard of three years old is reached. This wine will likely not have a DOC or DOCG numbered stamp on the bottle seal.

The celebrated Montepulciano Vino Nobile is a finer and rarer quality wine, sought after by collectors, gourmets and vintners for their wine cellars. Exports and values for this wine can be quite high and many vintages will be expected by experts to increase in value over time before peaking. The manufacture then and safeguarding of the brand of this fine Italian wine requires more attention to the seal, government oversight of quality, and export standards of quality certification for overseas resales and global export.

Montepulciano Vino Nobile is a very distinct variant from the Montepulciano region varietal made from the Abruzzo vine, as the Montepulciano Vino Nobile forms it base in the Sangiovese (Prugnolo gentile) grape juices from Tuscany. A bottle of "Montepulciano" might be any varietal derived from grapes grown in that region of Italy. But the appellation of Vino Nobile with the government quality seal rendered upon the bottle finishes the argument. The red Canaiolo grape is the recognized blend ingredient with select others to complete this superior wine.

The Vino Nobile di Montepulciano of the senior quality must be identifiable by the bottled label classification of highest degree Italian wine manufacture standards, or Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita. This means the minimum guaranteed manufacture and vintner standards for this high quality wine are assured for that vintage and region.

As the judicious blending and flavor of any varietal produce a singular wine, the minimums for Vino Nobile "Monte" must have a vine product Sangiovese inclusion at seventy per cent volume. Many Montes of the Vino Nobile will range very high into mid 80's for mixing. This density will have a very forward fruit nose and taste for wine aficionados who want a treat.

The Abruzzo Montepulciano will have likewise balanced but densely structured fruit and earth notes. The Abruzzo "Monte" wine product makes an excellent Italian table and dessert wine, without overwhelming most palates. Better appellations (DOC) will have more density and depth. The Abruzzo makes an affordable table wine for special occasions and celebrations of fine cuisine.
