Screw Top Wine Bottles
Wines of any vintage for hundreds of years were defined by the cork top sealing in the product of fine grapes and bottling for a cellared finish. Cork stoppages in the bottle necks of wine prevent air from getting to the wine and temperature and moisture and heat from harming the wine product condition taste and value. Materials like plastic simply do not serve the full purpose of taste optimization for wine production and bottling.
But cork is fallible in that it is biodegradable and can ruin a wine when improperly handled or applied to a wine ready for aging or storage. Cork pieces found in wine can ruin its taste texture and value. Cork also uses up natural resources which may not be return to recoverable and sustainable environmental preservation efforts and channels.
Cork stoppers in wine have been a traditional way to stop up the tops of conventional wine bottling until recently. Manufacture of cork tops and cork products utilizes bleaching agents which can taint the wine it comes into contact with. Many wine critics and wine consumers have an opinion about screw top wine bottling and screw top integration in the wine distribution cycle. But crispness versus corked wine risk strengthens the debate.
The methodology of crimping caps on the grooved wine bottle heads has come into question. Can the improper bottling incidence cause bottle shock and ruin the wine? Many critics argue that true vintage wine of the past will always remain in true cork form and that the majority of wines using screw caps today will be immediately consumed to a drink ability index of a few years. Thus the continued practice of corking continues, as does the continued evolution of some vineyards to screw cap their wines.
Corks bring bacteria to the wine, screw tops don't. Corking conveys flavor decay and contamination of the wine leading to greater expiration of drink ability. Screw cap bottling is a more efficient, often recyclable manner of stopping wine bottles that no longer translate to cheap wine without flavor or value. Sophisticated producers and ecology conscious vintners are using screw caps more and more.
Purists of wine lore may be up in arms due to the progressive nature of modern technology on the classic model of wine making, yet the arguably low to none negation value of using screw caps on wine versus cork deterioration cannot be ignored. Yet many wine fans enjoy the traditional sequence of wine tasting and drinking hearing a real cork pop.
